India’s push toward self-reliance in advanced manufacturing just got a major boost. Bengaluru-based deeptech startup Vimag Labs has raised $5 million in a Series A funding round as it works on a bold mission: reducing the world’s dependence on rare earth metals in electric motors.

The funding round was led by Accel, with participation from Chakra Growth Fund and Thinkuvate. The fresh capital will help the startup accelerate commercialization of its patented motor technology and expand its engineering and manufacturing capabilities.

At a time when rare earth supply chains are volatile, expensive, and geopolitically sensitive, Vimag Labs is offering a compelling alternative that could reshape electric motors across industries.

Why Rare Earth-Free Motors Matter More Than Ever

Rare earth metals play a critical role in most high-performance electric motors used today, especially in electric vehicles. However, these materials come with serious challenges.

The Problems with Rare Earth Metals

Rare earth elements are costly, difficult to mine, and largely controlled by a handful of countries. This creates supply risks for manufacturers, price fluctuations for automakers, and environmental damage from mining and processing.

As global demand for electric vehicles, industrial automation, and energy-efficient appliances rises, the pressure on rare earth supplies continues to grow.

This is the gap Vimag Labs wants to fill.

What Is Vimag Labs Building?

Founded in September 2025 by Manish Seth and Dr. Piyush Desai, Vimag Labs is developing advanced electric motor and power electronics solutions that do not rely on permanent magnets.

Instead of using physical magnets, the startup has created a patented Virtual Magnet Synchronous motor platform.

How Virtual Magnet Motors Work

Traditional motors depend on permanent magnets to generate magnetic fields. Vimag Labs replaces this with advanced electronics and control software that generate magnetic fields electronically inside the motor.

In simple terms, software takes over the role of magnets.

This allows the motor to deliver performance comparable to magnet-based motors while eliminating dependence on rare earth materials.

Performance Without the Trade-Offs

One of the biggest challenges with magnet-free motors has always been efficiency and performance. According to Vimag Labs, its Virtual Magnet architecture overcomes these limitations.

Key Advantages of Vimag’s Motor Technology

The company claims its motors offer high efficiency, strong torque, and smooth performance similar to conventional permanent magnet motors.

At the same time, they avoid the common problems associated with rare earth magnets, including cost volatility and supply disruptions.

Because the motors are largely software-defined, improvements can be made through updates rather than hardware redesigns, offering long-term flexibility for manufacturers.

Designed to Be Plug-and-Play for Automakers

One of the most attractive features of Vimag Labs’ technology is how easily it can be adopted.

The motors are designed as plug-and-play, drop-in systems. This means automakers and equipment manufacturers do not need to redesign their vehicles or production lines to use them.

Existing manufacturing setups and vehicle platforms can remain unchanged, significantly reducing adoption barriers and costs.

For an industry where retooling factories can take years and billions of dollars, this is a major advantage.

Applications Across Multiple Industries

Vimag Labs is not limiting itself to just electric vehicles. Its motor technology is designed for a wide range of applications.

Electric Vehicles

As EV adoption accelerates worldwide, automakers are searching for alternatives to rare earth-based motors. Vimag’s solution offers a promising path forward, especially for mass-market vehicles where cost control is critical.

Industrial Machines

Factories, robotics, and automation systems rely heavily on electric motors. Magnet-free motors can reduce long-term operating costs and improve supply chain stability for industrial customers.

HVAC and Refrigeration

Energy-efficient motors are essential for heating, cooling, and refrigeration systems. Vimag’s motors could help manufacturers meet stricter efficiency standards while avoiding material shortages.

Defence and Strategic Sectors

For defence applications, reducing reliance on imported rare earth materials is not just an economic issue but a strategic one. Indigenous, magnet-free motor technology could play a key role in national security.

How the $5 Million Funding Will Be Used

The newly raised capital will help Vimag Labs move from development to large-scale commercialization.

Accelerating Commercialisation

A major portion of the funding will go toward refining the Virtual Magnet motor platform and preparing it for mass production. This includes extensive testing, validation, and customer pilots.

Expanding Engineering and Manufacturing

Vimag Labs plans to grow its engineering team and invest in manufacturing capabilities to support future demand. Scaling production is critical if the company wants to serve large automotive and industrial customers.

Why Investors Are Backing Vimag Labs

Accel and other investors see Vimag Labs as a company tackling a global problem with a scalable, technology-driven solution.

As countries push for clean energy, electric mobility, and domestic manufacturing, demand for alternatives to rare earth-dependent technologies is expected to grow rapidly.

By combining deep engineering expertise with a software-first approach, Vimag Labs positions itself at the intersection of hardware innovation and digital control systems.

A Step Toward Self-Reliant Motor Technology

Vimag Labs represents a new wave of Indian deeptech startups focused on solving hard, foundational problems rather than building incremental software products.

If successful, its Virtual Magnet motor platform could reduce India’s dependence on imported rare earth materials while offering manufacturers a cost-effective, flexible alternative.

With strong investor backing and a clear commercialization roadmap, Vimag Labs is now moving from promise to execution.

The coming years will show whether software-driven magnet-free motors can truly replace traditional designs, but the early momentum suggests the industry is paying close attention.
