Brian Armstrong is the Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Coinbase. This is a big deal because Coinbase is one of the biggest cryptocurrency platforms in the world. He earned two bachelors degrees in these subjects. Then he got a masters degree in computer science from Rice University.

Armstrong started working at companies like IBM and Deloitte. After that he joined Airbnb as a software engineer. While working at Airbnb Armstrong saw that cross-border payments were not very efficient. This made him very interested, in Bitcoin and decentralized finance. Armstrong thought that Bitcoin and decentralized finance were really important.

In 2012 Brian Armstrong started working with Y Combinator and he co-founded Coinbase with Fred Ehrsam. The main goal of Coinbase was simple: they wanted to make it easy for people to buy Bitcoin sell Bitcoin and store Bitcoin. As time went on Coinbase did a lot more than that. They started to support different types of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin. They also made places for people to store their cryptocurrencies, called wallets. Coinbase made platforms for people who want to trade cryptocurrencies and they even started services that help people earn more cryptocurrencies, which is called staking. They also made services, for institutions that want to work with cryptocurrencies. All of this helped Coinbase become an important part of the crypto economy and it helped people and institutions get involved with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

Something big happened in April 2021. That is when Coinbase became the big cryptocurrency exchange to go public. It did this with a listing on the NASDAQ under the ticker symbol COIN. This was a deal for the crypto industry. It showed that people are getting more used to assets, in traditional financial markets. Coinbase is led by Armstrong. Under his leadership Coinbase has always tried to follow the rules be transparent and keep peoples information safe. These things are very important for Coinbase to grow around the world. Coinbase has to do these things to keep growing.

In January 2026 Armstrong got a lot of attention because he was very involved in the discussions about cryptocurrency rules in the United States. He spoke out against some parts of the proposed laws for assets. Armstrong said that if the rules are not made correctly they could hurt ideas harm the people who use cryptocurrency and cause companies to move their cryptocurrency work to other countries.

Armstrong believes that rules should keep people safe while still letting new technology happen. He thinks this is very important.

Armstrong has kept talking about how he wants the rules for cryptocurrency to be clear and to help ideas. He often talks to the people who make laws the people who enforce rules and big financial institutions, around the world about cryptocurrency.
