The new powerhouse for technology services, LTImindtree, born out of the merger between L&T Infotech and Mindtree, has one of its boldest transformations underway. Under the guidance of CEO and MD Venu Lambu, LTIMindtree is repositioning itself anew for global enterprises accelerating AI adoption; not as yet another IT services company but an “AI-centric, agentic enterprise” built for the future. And at the heart of the company’s strategy is an audacious experiment: a digital workforce of more than 1,500 AI-run “digital employees” that operate alongside humans across the organization.
A Workforce with Digital Colleagues
What sets LTIMindtree apart is in treating AI systems not as background automations, but as active, identifiable workers. These digital employees are given job roles, employee IDs, and even AI-generated faces to create a sense of presence and accountability. They are deployed across functions such as finance, infrastructure operations, customer onboarding, compliance checks, and customer service.
Each digital employee would be provided with a human manager who would be responsible for training, performance monitoring, and quality checks. Digital workers, like people, could be reviewed, promoted, or even “fired” when they fail to perform as needed. The human-in-the-loop model provides trustworthy deployment of AI and dissolves the notion that AI is stealing jobs; instead, it is a collaborator that augments human capability.
The largest traction to date has been in finance operations, where digital employees are helping reduce turnaround time on invoice processing, receivables reminders, and internal reporting. In infrastructure operations, these agents assist with alerts, remediation, and routine system checks, enabling engineers to focus on more complex tasks.
Decoupling Revenue from Headcount
For decades, Indian IT companies have been following a linear business model: more revenue means more people. Venu Lambu wants to break this cycle. As AI takes away the repetitive and rule-based processes, LTIMindtree is rejigging its workforce structure and its delivery model.
In the last few quarters, the company has been able to report revenue growth even as lateral hiring of experienced professionals comes down. This is a conscious effort toward improving the “people pyramid”—fresher hiring, redeployment of management layers into billable roles, and filling operational gaps with digital employees. Over the next five years, top management at LTIMindtree plans to achieve revenue growth without headcount growing in proportion, working toward a model wherein revenue grows while the number of employees increases only marginally.
This approach places LTIMindtree among the early large Indian IT firms to attempt to fundamentally rewrite the economics of services delivery through AI-led productivity.
BlueVerse: LTIMindtree’s AI Engine
The digital employees initiative is part of the much larger ecosystem known as BlueVerse, the dedicated AI business unit of the company. The BlueVerse ecosystem comprises more than 300 specialized AI agents for industry-specific and horizontal use cases. These integrate with enterprise systems to automate workflows for media, finance, manufacturing, hospitality, retail, and more.
Additionally, BlueVerse includes AI advisory services, a governance framework, and ready-to-deploy AI accelerators to facilitate clients’ journeys from experimentation toward scaled adoption. By integrating these elements, LTIMindtree intends to be a full-stack partner to every enterprise intending to pursue an AI-first operation.
Cultural Transformation at Scale
Perhaps the most profound shift driven by Lambu is cultural. In calling AI systems “digital employees,” LTIMindtree by design encourages its workforce to collaborate with AI rather than fear it. Employees are being up-skilled to become trainers, supervisors, and integration specialists in AI. Rather than viewing AI as a threat, teams are encouraged to think of AI as a junior colleague in dire need of guidance, supervision, and continuous improvement.
This cultural shift brings several aspects of discipline to the forefront. Each AI agent needs to be monitored, retrained, audited, and measured for business impact to ensure responsible AI adoption and avoid pitfalls created by uncontrolled automation.
The Road Ahead
Looking ahead to 2026, LTIMindtree expects year-over-year increases in deal flow in application modernization, data platforms, AI factories, and vendor consolidation. With global enterprises now moving from pilot projects to scaled AI programs, demand for integrated services in AI and automation is growing. Under Venu Lambu, LTIMindtree is positioning itself as a frontrunner in this transition. To be sure, by industrialising digital employees, scaling BlueVerse, and reengineering its workforce model, the company is creating a new template for the Indian IT sector-one in which AI would be a core engine of productivity and growth, not just a support function. The AI-driven push at LTIMindtree is more than just a technology upgrade; it is a structural transformation that could define the future of services companies. It may set the template for the next decade of IT delivery worldwide.
