Microsoft’s AI mastermind Mustafa Suleyman just shook the tech world with a shocking warning: developers and researchers need to immediately stop trying to make AI “conscious.” According to Suleyman, the idea that machines could think or feel like humans is not only impossible — it’s a massive distraction from real progress.
Suleyman Calls Out “Conscious AI” Projects
At the AfroTech Conference, Suleyman didn’t hold back. “If you ask the wrong question, you end up with the wrong answer. I think it’s totally the wrong question,” he said, dismissing projects that chase the illusion of AI with feelings or awareness.
He made it clear: only biological beings have consciousness, and chasing artificial “sentience” is a dead end.
AI Should Help Humans, Not Pretend to Be Human
Suleyman has been vocal about this for years. In his book The Coming Wave and his essay “We must build AI for people, not to be a person,” he emphasized that AI’s purpose is to serve people — not act like one.
“AI should be a tool, not a fake conscious entity,” Suleyman said.
Meanwhile, AI Boom Keeps Racing
Despite the warning, the AI industry is exploding. OpenAI and other companies are racing toward artificial general intelligence (AGI), while the AI companion market — led by Meta and Elon Musk’s xAI — continues to grow. Developers are tempted to make AI more “human-like,” even if it’s just an illusion.
Why Suleyman’s Warning Is a Wake-Up Call
As AI adoption surges, Suleyman’s caution is crucial. Mistaking AI for conscious beings could create huge ethical and practical problems, from unrealistic expectations to legal and social dilemmas. He urges the industry to focus on creating AI that truly empowers humans — not fools them into thinking it can “feel.”
