A Career Rooted in Rail and Infrastructure
Born in 1973 in Italy’s South Tyrol, Palla has had her professional path intricately intertwined with the transportation and infrastructure industry. She started working in 1997 at Infineon Technologies before moving to E.ON in Munich, Cologne, and then Milan. In 2011, she moved to Austria’s state railway company, ÖBB, where she served in key roles, such as Member of the Board for Regional Transport and Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of ÖBB Postbus. Palla became Deutsche Bahn’s Chief Financial Officer of DB Fernverkehr AG in 2019. She was made a member of the DB Management Board by July 2022 and became the CEO of DB Regio, operating regional and commuter rail transport. deutschebahn.com
A Strategic Appointment Amidst Challenges
Palla’s appointment is timely for Deutsche Bahn. The company has been gripped by chronic problems of underinvestment, obsolete infrastructure, and perpetual delays, which have provoked public discontent and criticism. In response to these issues, the German government has pledged more than €100 billion to upgrade the rail network by 2029. Palla’s significant experience in operational management and strategic change makes her an important player to lead these changes.
A Vision for the Future
Palla has highlighted the need for long-term dedication to rail reform in her new position. She believes that her leadership marks the start of a “new era” for Deutsche Bahn, with a view to improving customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. Her appointment is regarded as an attempt to bring in new leadership at the company and fix the systemic problems that have dogged its performance.
Acknowledging the Past
As Palla begins in her new position, she thanks her predecessor, Richard Lutz, for his efforts. During Lutz’s tenure, Deutsche Bahn launched the “Strong Rail” strategy, which tried to restore the company to its former operations. Besides, the S3 turnaround program was started in order to reorganize the company in terms of infrastructure, operations, and profitability. Palla takes over these programs and has the responsibility to develop them to their conclusion.
Looking Ahead
Evelyn Palla’s new role as Deutsche Bahn’s CEO is more than a leadership shift; it is a turning point in the company’s history. With an unambiguous mandate to spearhead change and modernization, Palla is well-set to take Deutsche Bahn into the future of efficiency and customer satisfaction. Her stewardship will be followed with interest as she takes on the challenges of rejuvenating one of Europe’s most vital transport networks.
